Linlee Marine Coatings put a 5-year warranty on its Crystal Marine Pro bottom coating because anything more would've only invited additional skepticism. However, CFO Lee Stellmacher says: "I truly believe that once you put this on, you'll never have to do anything else with your bottom, as long as that boat is a boat." And that includes scrubbing it.
If it proves as advertized, then Crystal Marine Pro could revolutionize the bottom paint/bottom coating industry. It is touted as being slick, resistant to any kind of marine growth, extremely durable, and environmentally safe.
The concept is actually quite simple. The coating is a non-porous polymer and too slick for any marine growth to attach to. There's no biocide to kill organisms and the paint is completely non-sacrificial, unlike ablative paints, which gradually wear away, leeching chemicals into the water and requiring regular repainting. A boat that is left in the water for any extended period of time will, according to Stellmacher, develop a thin film of slime. However that will be shed the moment the boat moves through the water at any significant speed, or with a quick swipe with a sponge...
